Videonystagmography (VNG) test

A videonystagmography (VNG) test helps doctors evaluate a patient’s balance by measuring a type of involuntary eye movement (nystagmus).

What is VNG?

The VNG test helps doctors pinpoint the cause of dizziness (or vertigo). Dizziness or balance issues can be triggered by problems in the inner ear or the central nervous system.  A

How it works

During the hourlong test, the patient wears infrared goggles that keep track of eye movement. The procedure has three parts:

  • Ocular-motor testing — Tracking dots or lights as they move on a screen.
  • Positional testing — Moving the head or body on command.
  • Caloric testing — Forcing warm and cool breezes (or streams of water) into each ear canal, stimulating the inner ear.

Benefits of VNG

The results of a VNG test help doctors evaluate the brain’s ability to coordinate eye movement and assess the body’s balance mechanism. Some side effects of the test include dizziness, nausea, anxiety, ear pressure and headaches. In most cases, the side effects are mild and temporary.

A VNG test can help doctors diagnose a variety of conditions, including vertigo, Meniere’s disease, migraines and acoustic neuromas.
