This is a sore throat that lasts for more than three months. The soreness can make it hard for you to swallow and speak.
What causes a chronic sore throat? Well, most sore throats are linked to a common cold or flu, or to a bacterial infection like strep. But a sore throat that doesn't go away may have another cause. It could be linked to allergies or dry air. It could be caused by acid reflux. It could be caused by an irritant that you breathe in.
You could have a chronic sore throat if you spend a lot of time talking or yelling, because this stresses your throat muscles. Sometimes a chronic sore throat is linked to an HIV or gonorrhea infection. It could also be linked to a tumor. There are other possible causes, too. Your doctor will find out the cause of your sore throat.
What are the symptoms? Your throat can feel painful, scratchy and irritated. It hurts more when you swallow. Your tonsils and the glands in your neck may be swollen. And your voice may sound hoarse.
How do we treat it? Well, it depends on the reason for your sore throat. Over-the-counter medications may help you feel better. But we need to treat the cause of your sore throat so it can heal. Your doctor will create a plan that's right for you.
